Happy Birthday, Bhaichung Bhutia:Hailed as the torchbearer of Indian football in the international arena, Bhaichung Bhutia celebrates his 49th birthday on Monday, December 15. Nicknamed the ‘Sikkimese Sniper’ for his kicks and goals, Bhutia is one of the greatest Indian footballers ever. Born in an agricultural family with both his parents being farmers in Sikkim, Bhutia won a football scholarship from the Sports Authority of India to attend the Tashi Namgyal Academy in Gangtok at the age of just 9. He went on to represent his school with distinction and played for several clubs in his growing-up days before his talent was recognised at the 1992 Subroto Cup. Former India goalkeeper Bhaskar Ganguly spotted Bhutia’s talent and helped him make the transition to Calcutta football, where he represented iconic clubs East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan. Bhutia made his senior international debut during the 1995 edition of the Nehru Cup against Thailand at the age of 19. Bhutia made 107 appearances for India and hit the net 42 times during his inspiring career in the blue jersey. The 49-year-old, who represented East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and a host of other clubs in his senior career, also fetched 128 league goals.
