Hair care is often thought of as a cosmetic routine, but maintaining a clean scalp is much more than just aesthetics—it’s fundamental to your overall scalp and hair health. Whether it’s the appeal of no-shampoo trends or simple forgetfulness, skipping hair washes for extended periods can lead to more problems than you might imagine. Dr Shikha Khare, Consultant Dermatologist at Yatharth Hospitals, explains that poor scalp hygiene can create a breeding ground for issues ranging from minor irritation to significant hair and scalp disorders. Your scalp produces natural oils called sebum, which moisturise and protect the skin and hair. However, when you don’t wash your hairfor days, these oils mix with dirt, dead skin cells, and environmental pollutants. This can lead to a buildup that clogs hair follicles and encourages microbial growth, including bacteria and fungi.
