Aligarh Renaming Row: Opposition Councillors Question BJP's Motives

According to opposition councillors, in 2023, a BJP councillor had given a verbal suggestion to rename Aligarh as Harigarh in the Municipal Corporation House. This was immediately objected to by the opposition councillors. They claim that the videography of the proceedings of the House held during that time is present in the records of the Municipal Corporation. Also, the relevant suggestion is not mentioned as a written proposal in any of the proceedings of the Municipal Corporation. The advertisement councillors questioned the ongoing discussions and the process of changing the name. If there is no proposal in this regard in the Municipal Corporation, then on what basis the change of name is being pursued. They alleged that the issue of renaming is motivated by electoral politics and attempts are being made to divert public attention from the real problems of the city. The opposition councillors said that the issues related to development, education, unemployment, health, waterlogging, poor roads and other infrastructure facilities in the city should be in priority. Instead of solving these problems, the government should spend money and signage on various government documents.
