The Allahabad High Court has suspended the sentence of Congress leader Dr. Manish Kumar Upadhyay, a resident of Varanasi, who was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in an attempt to murder case. The order was passed by a single bench of Justice Vani Ranjan Agrawal. The court has modified the order passed on 22nd May and noted on 11th June that the sentence awarded to Dr. Manish Kumar Upadhyay shall remain suspended and the effect and operation of the order of conviction shall also remain suspended pending the present appeal. The Prevention of Corruption Act Special Court, Varanasi had convicted Mahendra Upadhyay and Dr. Manish Kumar Anya on 16th July 2019 in a case registered at Bhelupur police station in the year 1995 under section 307/34 IPC. The court had awarded 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 25,000. There was an order of four months additional imprisonment for non-payment of fine. Dr. Manish Kumar Upadhyay filed a criminal appeal against the sentence on 9th January 2020 on which the Coordination Bench of the High Court granted him bail.
