Balochistan's Complex Political Landscape: A Leader's Personal Account

Balochistan has remained one of the most complex and contentious political problems in South Asia for the past several decades. The region is rich in natural gas, gold, copper, coal, and other mineral resources, but despite this, there have been persistent questions about its development, human rights, and political representation. Advocate Sadiq Baloch, a Baloch leader recently living in exile in Finland and the former head of the Balochistan Bar Association, in an exclusive conversation, brought up the situation in Balochistan, his personal experiences, and the outlook of the Baloch movement. According to Sadiq Baloch, Balochistan has long had an atmosphere where dissenting voices face serious risks. He said that while in the advocacy profession, he witnessed many cases of alleged abductions and killings of lawyers, doctors, and social activists. He says that he himself was arrested several times, placed under house arrest, and after feeling threatened, he had to leave the country and eventually take refuge in the British-ruled province of Balochistan, which he claims to be the largest Baloch force in the history of the Balochistan independence movement.
