Bangladesh Hopes for Improved Relations with West Bengal After BJP's Victory

The Bangladesh government seems to be happy with the results of the West Bengal assembly elections. The neighbouring country has expressed hope that relations between Bengal and Bangladesh will now be better. Regarding the Teesta barrage agreement, it has said that the new government will help in taking it forward. It has also described Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as an obstacle to the agreement. In Bangladesh, the ruling BNP leader and MP Azizul Bari Helal has expressed happiness over the victory of the BJP. He said, "I am shocked that the TMC suffered a heavy defeat after being in power for a long time in West Bengal. I congratulate the winner, Suvendu Adhikari's BJP. This victory of the BJP under the leadership of Suvendu Adhikari will ensure that relations between the West Bengal and Bangladesh governments will remain as good as before... I hope that a peaceful relationship between India and Bangladesh will be built." The Information Secretary of the BNP said, "First, we saw that Mamata Banerjee was actually establishing a Teesta barrage in Bangladesh, and now under the leadership of Modi, the BJP won the elections."
