Bangladesh Turns to China for Electricity Amid Controversy Over Indian Supply

There is a clear bias towards India in Bangladesh's power policy. When India increased the power tariff by 1 paisa per unit, Dhaka objected. But now the Tarique Rahman government is going to buy electricity from a Chinese company by giving 25 taka per unit. This company will make electricity from waste. If you understand the whole calculation, Bangladesh was paying 11 taka per unit for electricity to India. But the rate given by China is 127 percent higher than this. China has given 25 taka per unit to Bangladesh for waste-to-energy. At present, the price of one taka is 0.77 Indian rupees, but context is needed to understand this comparison. This project going on in Aminbazar, Dhaka is not a substitute for the huge supply of electricity by India to Bangladesh. This project is a small Chinese project, which has a capacity of only 42 megawatts (MW), and its main purpose is to deal with the growing waste problem in Dhaka. But this politically sensitive project is facing long power cuts, gas supply shortages and protests.
