BJP Gains as Muslims Sit Out in Assam Assembly Election

Guwahati: The Assam Assembly election 2026 has proved to be a bonus for the BJP. The voters have almost made Muslims sit in the opposition. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had been saying from the beginning that delimitation would ensure that indigenous communities retain more than 100 seats out of 126 seats. At the same time, the Congress consolidated its position in a shrinking Muslim-dominated area, which cost perfumer Badruddin Ajmal's AIUDF dear. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: It is unfortunate that all but one Congress MLA follow Islam. I am not saying that Hindus or Muslims have won. I am just giving figures and this is your analysis. Delimitation has brought the Congress and the AIUDF face to face in Assam's first Assembly election after the delimitation of constituencies in 2023. Delimitation proved to be an unexpected factor. The number of Muslim-majority AIUF contesting the second election in Assam has now come down to 22.
