BJP Government's Special Package Leads to Trinamool Congress Strongman's Surprise Withdrawal in Bengal Election

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress strongman and Falta assembly seat candidate Jahangir Khan, who had bragged that he would "not bow down" in Bengal politics, finally surrendered just 48 hours before the polls. On the last day of campaigning, before the re-poll scheduled for May 21, Jahangir announced his withdrawal from the electoral fray. After a "special package" from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and a stern warning from him, the newly formed BJP government in the state, Jahangir's surrender heralds a new era in Bengal politics. Interestingly, Jahangir Khan cited Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's special package for the development of Falta as the reason for his withdrawal, even though his name will be on the EVM due to the last date for withdrawal of nominations.
