In Punjab, the BJP is trying to strengthen its hold among the Sikh community. Under this strategy, the party is now trying to reach out to religious and social institutions that are considered to have a big influence in the Sikh community. On the anniversary of Operation Blue Star on June 6, Girish Mahajan, a minister in the Maharashtra government and a BJP leader, reached the Damdami Taksal in Mehta Chowk, about 40 kilometers from Amritsar. He participated in the program organized by the Mint chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhuma. Political experts say that this is the first time that a senior BJP leader has joined the program of the Damdami Taksal. The Damdami Taksal was founded by Guru Gobind Singh in the year 1706. This institution works to promote Sikh religious teachings and is considered to have a good hold in a large section of the Sikh community of Punjab. This initiative of the BJP is now being seen as an attempt to reach out to the Sikh voters. According to political analysts, the BJP does not want to expand its base to the rural areas of Punjab.
