BJP's Absolute Majority in Nagaur Municipal Elections Marred by Unexpected Defeat in Deputy Chairman Election

The results of the municipal elections 2026 in Nagaur district of Rajasthan have once again created a political stir. Despite the BJP getting an absolute majority in the two major municipal bodies of the district, the post of Deputy Chairman has received an unexpected setback. The biggest topic of discussion was the Deputy Chairman election of Nagaur Municipal Council, where independent candidate Mohammad Sharif Qureshi won by defeating the BJP candidate by a margin of five votes. There are a total of 60 seats in Nagaur Municipal Council. In the election for the post of Chairman, BJP got 55 votes while Congress got only 5 votes. BJP easily won the post of Chairman with an absolute majority. But the political equations were reversed in the Deputy Chairman election held on Tuesday. Independent Mohammad Sharif Qureshi got 32 votes in the voting for the post of Deputy Chairman. BJP candidate Shiv Kumar alias Miku Rao got 27 votes. One vote was rejected. Thus, Mohammad Sharif Qureshi was declared the winner by a margin of five votes. According to the sources, the BJP candidate was declared the special candidate of the state Vice President. Despite this, the party's victory was heard by the supporters of independent candidate Mohammad Sharif Qureshi.
