BJP's Y Khemchand Singh Elected Leader of Legislative Party in Manipur

Imphal:BJP MLA Y Khemchand Singhwas on Tuesday elected as the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s legislative party in Manipur. Party sources said Singh, who represents Singjamei Assembly constituency, is widely expected to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister. The move clears the way for a new government amid prolonged instability and ethnic tensions in the state.Recently, Khemchand drew attention for his outreach to Kuki villages in Litan. The visit was seen as unprecedented, as no Meitei leader had ventured into Kuki-inhabited areas due to security concerns and mistrust. Observers described it as a rare confidence-building gesture to restore dialogue across communities.A seasoned legislator, Khemchand, 58, brings extensive legislative and administrative experience to the top post. He served as Speaker of theManipur Legislative Assemblyfrom 2017 to 2022, handling intense political activity and delicate floor management.After the 2022Assembly elections, he joined the Cabinet in the second ministry led by N Biren Singh. There, he held key departments includingMunicipal Administration, Housing Development(MAHUD), Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, and Education. He oversaw urban governance as well as grassroots development sectors.Beyond politics, Khemchand is known for his active participation in cultural and community events. He recently went viral for videos of him dancing during Christmas celebrations, attracting widespread attention. Similar videos surfaced during the Kut festival, reinforcing his image as a leader who engages openly with diverse cultural traditions.The BJP’s choice to project Khemchand as its legislative leader reflects an effort to combine administrative experience, political acceptability, and outreach credentials. This comes at a time when the state continues to face displacement, security challenges, and the search for lasting peace.Officials have not yet announced details regarding the swearing-in ceremony or the composition of the Council of Ministers.Related
