A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) dismissed the plea of Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary and party's Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee seeking an expeditious hearing on his plea seeking permission to go abroad for eye treatment. On Tuesday, Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, filed a petition before a single-judge bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya in the Calcutta High Court seeking permission to go abroad for eye treatment. Along with the court's plea seeking permission to travel abroad, an application was also made for a fast-track hearing of the case. However, on Wednesday, Justice Bhattacharya's bench clearly stated that there was no reason to allow an expeditious hearing and also said that the matter would be heard as per normal procedure. Following a recent order of another single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, the West Bengal Police's Investigation Department did not sign the letter of Abhishek Banerjee to the West Bengal Assembly in connection with the case.
