Calcutta High Court Refuses Immediate Relief to Trinamool Congress, Rebel MLA Remains Leader of Opposition

Amid the ongoing controversy over the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, on Thursday (June 11, 2026), the Calcutta High Court has given a big decision. The High Court has refused to grant any immediate relief to the petition of Mamata Banerjee's party Trinamool Congress and put a stay on the LoP appointment for the time being. This means that the rebel Trinamool Congress MLA Ritabrata Banerjee will remain as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. This decision of the High Court is a big blow to the TMC and Mamata Banerjee. In fact, after the victory in the Bengal Assembly election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formed the government in the state and Mamata Banerjee's party, which was in power for 15 years, came into the opposition. After coming to the opposition, the TMC gave the responsibility of the Leader of the Opposition to Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, but the Speaker of the Assembly and Speaker Rathindranath Bose took a big decision and accepted the rebel TMC leader Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition.
