Canada Retaliates Against US with Tariffs on $20 Billion Worth of Goods

Canada retaliated against the United States on Tuesday (August 25) by imposing new tariffs on about US $20 billion worth of American goods. These include steel, dairy products, household appliances and agricultural equipment. This has further intensified the trade war between the two once close neighbors. On Monday, Trump threatened to raise tariffs on Canada. This tension threatens to affect one of the world's largest trading relationships. The new tariffs are not limited to industrial goods, but are also imposed on everyday items such as seafood, cheese, clothing, cosmetics and toilet paper. Tariffs on some of these products are up to 50 percent. Canada's retaliation comes after the Trump administration imposed a 50 percent tariff on Canadian goods over the weekend. This move was made after trade talks failed. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the United States of trying to subjugate Canada. During the failed talks, he said that Donald Trump "wants to destroy Canadian industries" and that the president "wants Canadian leaders to come to the negotiating table" on Monday.
