The Chakrata assembly seat in Uttarakhand is hotting up ahead of the 2027 elections. There is talk of new political equations in the area after the return of former Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Ramsharan Nautiyal to the Congress. It would not be wrong to call this seat a Congress stronghold. The seat has been held by senior Congress leader Pritam Singh since the formation of the state. Actually, the Chakrata seat in Dehradun district is a Scheduled Tribe reserve and falls in the Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency. The seat, bordering Himachal, is almost entirely rural. According to data compiled on the basis of the 2011 census, about 55 percent of the population is Scheduled Tribe and about 33 percent is Scheduled Caste. The number of voters varies in different sources, but is roughly reported to be around 1.05 million. Pritam Singh won all the five elections held from 2002 to 2022 after the formation of the state of Uttarakhand. His father Gulab Singh also represented this seat in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly eight times. However, Madhu Singh Chauhan, an Independent, did not win every time in 2012, as he was defeated by the party's second candidate by 26533 votes.
