Congress Prioritizes Financially Strong Candidates for Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections

The tussle between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party over seat-sharing for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections continues. Meanwhile, the Congress is planning to give preference to financially strong candidates. The aim is to keep its position strong in the campaign. According to a senior party functionary, the Congress intends to fight the upcoming assembly elections very seriously. Therefore, candidates with a strong hold among the public and able to manage themselves will be given preference. However, where workers from a simple background holding ground are more likely to win, a concession will be given. In addition, candidates are also expected to contribute to the party fund to strengthen the party's position. This new stance of the Congress is contrary to the experiences of the 2022 assembly elections. According to reports, at that time, the party gave up to 70 lakh rupees to many candidates to contest the elections. But after the elections, there were complaints that despite getting the funds, many candidates did not campaign properly in the 2024 elections and despite the money, the Congress won only 399 seats in the Lok Sabha elections and Rahul Gandhi won only two seats in Uttar Pradesh.
