Deepesh Devendran made an impressive Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) debut on Wednesday, August 5, playing for Madurai Panthers against Trichy Grand Cholas. Deepesh returned figures of 1-25 from his four overs of his first-ever appearance in the tournament. But what caught everyone’s attention was the speeds he clocked during his spell, consistently clocking well over 140 kph. He castled Jafar Jamal with a delivery that hurried onto the batter and beat his defence to crash into the middle stump. It was clocked at 143 kph. In the 16th over of the innings, the final over of his spell, he clocked 146 kph on the first ball. He crossed the 140 kph-mark thrice more in the same over, beating the batters with his pace and conceding only two runs. He played five matches and picked up six wickets, including two in the final against England. He was also the highest wicket-taker at the U19 Asia Cup last year, picking up 14 wickets in five matches at an amazing economy of 11.92 and a strike rate of 15. Deepesh also made the headlines on India U19's Australia tour, picking up 10 wickets, including a in the first youth Test in Brisbane. After returning from Australia, his rise continued as he for Tamil Nadu in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, India's national domestic U19 50-over tournament. As for the TNPL game, the Trichy Grand Cholas rode on brilliant knocks from Suresh Kumar (43), Sanjay Yadav (37*) and R Rajkumar (35) to post 173 runs on the board.
