The brief arrest of former British royal Andrew Windsor in the UK , in connection to the controversial Jeffrey Epstein files, stunned people globally. The high profile arrest of Windsor, who was accused of misconduct in public office and passing sensitive information to Epstein, was perceived as a welcome sign of accountability from the elite, which is not usually the case. Windsor, who had also been accused of sexual abuse by victims of Epstein, including late Virginia Giuffre, had consistently denied wrongdoing and has been released under investigation. One noteworthy observation, however, remained that while Windsor and other European elites with ties to Epstein have faced consequences, little has been done to hold those accountable in US. It is possible. There has been mounting pressure on people named in the Epstein files to resign or step aside, particularly in higher education. Goldman Sachs’ top lawyer Kathy Ruemmler, who referred to Epstein as ‘Uncle Jeffrey’ also had to resign from her post. In Congress, US lawmakers are also pushing hard for accountability, in fact ex-US President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton are also expected to testify in the matter. This could be attributed to Trump administration’s stronghold on the US Department of Justice (DOJ), which had released a huge tranche of files. Attorney-general Pam Bondi for instance has been vocal in her praises for Trump, calling him the greatest president in American history. Most recently, a huge banner featuring Trump’s face was slung across the Justice Department building. Such actions indicate that the DOJ is not an independent government department anymore. It has been weaponised by the Trump administration. Even the FBI, under Kash Patel’s leadership, has been focused on investigating Trump’s claims about 2020 election “fraud” in Georgia instead of taking strong action against revelations made in the Epstein files. Patel in fact wrote a series of children’s books depicting Trump as an unjustly wronged “king”. Trump, whose name has appeared multiple times in documents related to the Epstein case, has not faced any formal charges or official action in connection with the matter. He has also not been called to testify before the US Congress. Other high-profile figures, including Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking, have likewise been mentioned in previously released materials but have not faced legal consequences stemming from those disclosures. For now, it remains unclear whether any further investigations or actions will be pursued.
