Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, convicted in a 1984 Sikh riots case, died on Thursday (August 20). Sajjan Kumar, serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail, was taken to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital where he breathed his last at the age of 81. After the assassination of former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi, the father-son duo was killed in the Saraswati Vihar area on 1 November 1984. Sajjan Kumar was convicted in this case related to the murder. He was found guilty of inciting a mob in Saraswati Vihar which led to the murder of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarandeep Singh. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment on 17 December 2018. Sajjan Kumar resigned from the Congress after being convicted. Moreover, former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar was convicted on 12 February under sections related to rioting, unlawful assembly and murder etc. Sajjan Kumar, who challenged the conviction in the year 2025, was again sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case by the Supreme Court of Delhi.
