Government Rules Out Special Session for Constitutional Amendment Bills

Rijiju made it clear that there was no proposal to extend the duration of Parliament or call a special session between August 16 and 18. This has put an end to the discussions that the government could introduce these two bills in a special session. However, the discussion on these bills is still going on in political circles and the opposition is watching the government's strategy ahead. The constitutional amendment bills related to delimitation and women's reservation require a two-thirds majority in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to pass. That is why there was talk that the government is trying to gather the necessary support first. After the recent political developments, the government's position is already considered strong, but gathering the necessary numbers for a constitutional amendment is still considered a major challenge. The Congress maintains that its stance on the issue of delimitation is the same as before and there is no change in it. Venugopal also said that if the FCRA bill continues for the time being, the government will have a strong response on the upcoming special session.
