Vizhinjam:: The Government of India now wants to make Matsyafed a national-level cooperative in the fisheries sector, on the lines of the Amul model in the dairy sector that brought laurels to India and changed the fortunes of millions of livestock farmers all over the world. Union Minister of State for Fisheries, George Kurien, today made an important announcement in this regard at Vizhinjam near Thiruvananthapuram. Inaugurating a workshop organised under the PM Vikas Yojana at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Bharath in coordination with the State Government, the Minister said that if the Kerala Government approaches the Centre with a suitable proposal, the Government is ready to provide full financial assistance to Matsyafed to develop a national-level cooperative model. He made it clear that for the true development of fishermen, the Central and State Governments have to walk hand-in-hand.
