India Appoints Dinesh Trivedi as Next High Commissioner to Bangladesh

New Delhi: Dinesh Trivedi, former Union Minister and former Member of Parliament from Barrackpore, West Bengal, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh. The discussion on this decision of the government has intensified. He has a deep understanding of the social, political and geographical conditions of Bangladesh due to his long association with West Bengal. This experience can prove to be helpful in further strengthening bilateral relations, improving trade, connectivity and diplomatic synergy. On the other hand, this appointment is also considered important in terms of security of the India-Bangladesh border and control over illegal activities. An experienced and understanding face of the region can play an effective role in dealing with cross-border infiltration, smuggling and security challenges, which is expected to further strengthen trust and cooperation between the two countries. UPA (United Progressive Alliance) era Mendinesh Trivedi also served as the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, in addition to Railway Minister. The proposal to increase passenger fares in the Railway Budget in 2012 sparked a political controversy. This decision was finally opposed by Mamata Banerjee and TMC's Railway Minister Dinesh Roy.
