New Delhi: As the war between Iran and Israel in the Middle East has sent oil prices soaring globally, the Indian government has adopted a very firm diplomatic stance. Reacting to the alleged'waiver'or permission given to India by the US to buy oil from Russia, the central government has made it clear that India is a sovereign nation and does not need any country's permission to buy oil in its national interest. In a statement issued on Saturday, India has roared that it will continue to import oil from wherever it is cheapest and best. The government has expressed confidence that India's energy supplies are fully secure despite tensions such as the war in the Strait of Hormuz. India has very cleverly diversified its oil supply sources over the past few years, which have now increased from 27 to 40 countries. This strategy has not left India dependent on any single supply route or country. Russia remains India's largest supplier of crude oil in February 2026, even as per the latest data from the Western Energy Stability Center.
