India Experiences Increase in Heavy Rainfall Events: Study Warns of Flood and Drought Risks

This has been revealed in a new study on the rainfall data of 124 years. According to the study, the state is experiencing an increase in rainfall of 20.4 centimeters or more in 24 hours. This change has been seen most in the areas of northern Kerala and the Western Ghats. This study has been done by the scientists of the Meteorological Department (IMD), Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, NIT Patna and the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST). They say that if this trend continues further, the risk of floods and droughts may increase. The scientists looked at the 124-year rainfall record. It showed that now the rains are not equal throughout the season. Now it is raining a lot in a short time. This increases the risk of floods on one hand, and on the other hand, there may be a shortage of water if it does not rain for a long time. In this study, the Precipitation Concentration Index (PCI) has been used. This scale, which shows that the rainfall has increased continuously throughout the year or in a few days. The study found that the PCI has increased in some places.
