India: FCRA Bill Controversy Continues Amid Calls for Review or Withdrawal

The controversy over the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 continues. Meanwhile, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma after meeting Home Minister Amit Shah said that the bill can be brought for passage in Parliament on 12 August. However, the law will not be implemented from this date. There is concern among the Christian community and NGOs about the provisions of the bill. In this regard, a 10-member delegation of Christian clerics led by Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The delegation put forth their demand before the Home Minister that the FCRA bill be either withdrawn or sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for review. This is the second time that the Catholic Bishops'Conference of India (CBCI) has met Amit Shah. Earlier on 10 July, too, the CBCI had written to the Home Minister assuring the representatives of the Christian mission to take note of the bill and prepare a new draft after discussing with all the parties.
