India Responds to US Objections Over Foreign Funding Regulation Bill

Amid the ongoing controversy over the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, India has responded to the objections of a US lawmaker. India says the changes to the foreign funding law are aimed at increasing transparency, paving the way for better governance, and making the rules clearer. In a series of posts on X, India's Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra also released a detailed account of the myth versus truth on the bill. He wrote, "There are many misperceptions in the media and civil society about the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. There is a myth versus truth analysis." Rejecting claims that India is enacting new legislation to curb foreign aid to civil society, Kwatra said that regulating the flow of foreign funds into the public and political spheres is a sovereign step, driven by national security concerns. He said, "It was the first of its kind in a modern democracy."
