New Delhi: The 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies is likely to be implemented from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. The Modi government has started a new initiative in this regard. Sources say that changes are being made in the 106th Constitutional Amendment Act. A bill in this regard is likely to come in this session of Parliament. Why does the 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies need to be changed? In 2023, Parliament through the 106th Constitutional Amendment Act provided for 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. This law was called the Nari Shakti Vandana Act. It provided that after the implementation of the law, the first census would be held and seats would be reserved for women. Currently, the census process is going on, which is expected to be completed in March next year. Then the census data will be released, based on which the delimitation work will be completed in two years. Normally, the delimitation work can be completed in three years.
