Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi told the Lok Sabha that the price of the Indian crude basket had reached about $135 per barrel during the West Asia crisis. If the government had not taken steps, the price of petrol in Delhi would have reached about 125 rupees per liter. However, people in Delhi continued to get petrol at 94.77 per liter. According to the government, the availability of domestically produced ethanol in it was also contributing. Ethanol companies also rejected the claims that the old petrol was being purchased from them at a rate of 70 rupees per liter.
