Police had reached Bilaspur area under Udaynarayanpur police station limits in Howrah in search of Brahmanand Chakraborty, a local TMC leader. Locals had accused him of taking alleged'cut money'in a government housing scheme and extortion. When the police arrived to nab him, he hid under a huge pile of saris in the storeroom of a cloth shop. During the search, the police grew suspicious and removed the bundles of saris. Brahmanand Chakraborty was subsequently escorted out of the place and arrested. He is also said to be under investigation for allegations related to political violence after the 2021 assembly elections. In Amardaha village in Howrah district itself, the anger of the villagers came out in the open against another TMC leader, Sanyasi Manna. Villagers allege that he used to extort money from poor people in the name of providing benefits of government schemes. Villagers claim that Aadhaar cards and job cards were also found from his house. People alleged that Manna did not receive money from the schemes.
