Indian Politician Meenakshi Natarajan's Rajya Sabha Nomination Rejected Over Unreported Court Summons

In fact, Meenakshi Natarajan's nomination for Rajya Sabha member was rejected by the Returning Officer. The BJP had filed an objection that summons were issued against her in a court of law, which she did not disclose in the nomination paper. After the cancellation of nomination, Meenakshi Natarajan first appealed to the Election Commission, but did not get relief. She then moved the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had refused to intervene, citing that the election process had begun, but gave her the liberty to file an election petition. The petition in the High Court states that a Telangana court had issued summons to her only because she was made a respondent while hearing a complaint filed by a woman. According to the petition, there were no specific allegations against her in the complaint and the summons were issued only to know her version. As there was no pending criminal case against her, the cancellation of nomination by the Returning Officer is contrary to rules and illegal.
