India's Efforts to Replace Colonial Laws May Erase Historic Civil Lines Area

From beautiful buildings, the settlement of more educated people, to much more. The concept and name of Civil Lines dates back to the British era. It used to be the residential area of their jamen. But, now Civil Lines may be lost in the pages of history. This is because as the central government is trying to replace colonial-era laws and practices with things of Indian origin and reflecting the country's culture. According to the Times of India report, a large-scale work is being done by the government to identify the remnants of British rule. The government's aim is to free such thinking from colonial influence and adopt indigenous identity. In January 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked senior officials and colonial officials to identify the alternatives whose civil lines were developed in the 19th century.
