Iran Appoints New Security Chief After Death of Ali Larijani

Following the death of Ali Larijani, the head of the Security Council in Iran, the country has undergone a major leadership transition. Mohammad Bagher Zulghadr has been appointed as the new security chief. Larijani was recently killed in Israeli airstrikes, along with his son Morteza Larijani and the head of his office, Alireza Bayat. The incident occurred on the outskirts of Tehran on 17 March, while he was visiting his daughter's home. Larijani was the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and was considered a key architect of the country's defense, nuclear, and foreign policy. Ali Larijani was a close advisor to Iran's former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a leader devoted to the Islamic Revolution. His death has been described as a martyrdom in the Iranian media. Bagher Zulghadr is a former senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps and has long been associated with the Iranian security apparatus. He has also served as deputy commander of the IRGC and deputy interior minister during his tenure.
