Iran Buries Ayatollah Ali Khamenei After Week of Mourning Ceremonies

Iran on Thursday buried its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, at the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad. His funeral took place after a week of funeral processions and mourning ceremonies. Khamenei was killed in a US airstrike on the first day of the war on February 28. Khamenei's body was carried on a truck through the crowded streets of Mashhad to Imam Reza's shrine. Thousands of mourners dressed in black joined the funeral procession, waving Iranian flags, photos of the late leader, and red posters with revolutionary slogans. Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike on his Tehran residence on February 28. The attack occurred on the first day of the war between Iran and the US-Israel. Several members of his family were also killed. Later, his son Mojtaba Khamenei was made the new supreme leader, but he did not attend the funeral on Thursday morning, and Ali's family did not attend the ceremony.
