Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Passes Resolution Demanding Full Statehood Restoration

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday (28 September) passed a resolution demanding immediate restoration of full statehood. The opposition BJP walked out of the House. The resolution was moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday last week. However, it was deferred as several members wanted to speak on the issue. The opposition BJP opposed the resolution on both Friday and Monday. Party members created ruckus in the well of the House, tore papers and staged mock proceedings. The resolution said, "In addition to the resolutions passed by this House on 26 June 2000 and 6 November 2024, the House demands immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir from the Government of India and decides that the resolution be sent to the Government of India." The Farooq Abdullah-led NC government had passed a resolution on 26 June 2000 to restore greater autonomy to the state as it existed before 9 August 1953. The National Conference (NC) members had moved a special resolution demanding restoration of special status to the state on 6 November 2024.
