In a significant step towards consolidating peace in Assam, Kuki Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups have announced the dissolution of their armed organisations following the signing of a Memorandum of Settlement with the Central and the state governments on March 15. The groups comprising the Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA), United Kuki Defence Army (UKDA), and Kuki Liberation Army (KLA/KLO), said all affiliated units have been disbanded with effect from March 23. In a joint statement, the organisations described the agreement as a “historic milestone” marking a transition from conflict to cooperation and signalling a new phase of reconciliation and political engagement in the region. The groups have directed all cadres to vacate designated camps, return to their homes and reintegrate into civilian life in accordance with the Constitution. They have also urged their members and supporters to cooperate with authorities in maintaining peace and stability. Seeking to address concerns raised by some sections, the leaders said their demands had been moderated to avoid potential conflicts with other communities. They noted that proposals such as a Kuki Tribes Autonomous Regional Council in Karbi Anglong and the creation of a separate Borail district in Dima Hasao had been set aside in the interest of broader harmony. They added that any future proposals, including the creation of new MAC seats, would be pursued only after consultations with all stakeholders. The groups expressed concern over protests and apprehensions voiced in certain quarters, but said the government had adopted a balanced approach aimed at ensuring inclusivity. At the same time, they urged the Central and the state governments to ensure timely and faithful implementation of all provisions of the settlement, stating that the credibility of the peace process would depend on it. In a clarification, the groups said any individual or entity claiming to act in their name following the dissolution would be treated as unauthorised. Reiterating their commitment to peace and development, the groups said the agreement offers an opportunity to build a stable and harmonious future for all communities in the state.
