Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee for a meeting. The Speaker has given Banerjee an appointment on 19 June. Om Birla wants him to present his side on the matter of rebellion in the party and clarify the situation. Rebel TMC MPs had recently announced their merger with the Northeast political party Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). The party is a registered unrecognized party of Tripura, which was formed in 2022. In the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections, the party had fielded candidates on 2 seats and both candidates lost their deposits. Since the crushing defeat at the hands of the BJP in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee's TMC has been in a state of rebellion. The party is now on the verge of splitting. With 40 MPs in both houses of Parliament, the Trinamool has now played a powerful role in the national politics. Twenty-eight TMC MPs have merged with the new national party.
