Madhya Pradesh's Uniform Civil Code Bill Sent Back to State Government for Further Review

The Bill was sent to Raj Bhawan for approval. Governor had sought legal opinion on it from Law and Legislative wing of Lok Bhawan. After getting legal opinion and Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav met the Governor, the Bill was sent back to the State Government. Since many provisions in the UCC Bill are directly related to Central laws, it requires Presidential assent. Union Home Department will also review its constitutional and legal aspects. As soon as the President gives his assent, the Law and Legislative Department will notify it in the Gazette and its provisions will be effective in the state. Under the proposed Uniform Civil Code, the state will have a uniform provision for divorce, inheritance, and polygamy, with a similar legal remedy.
