CPI (M) candidate in Raiganj Jibanananda Singh, CPI (M) candidate in Hemtabad Tanushree Das, CPI (M) candidate in Kaliaganj Hiru Roy, CPI (M) candidate in Karandighi Mohammad Shahabuddin, and CPI candidate in Itahar Utpal Das filed their nominations. The nomination sparked a public outcry in Raiganj. The candidates marched to the district administration office in Karanjora. People thronged Raiganj town. A 6-kilometre march was carried out towards Karanjora. Of the 12 assembly seats in Malda, the Left Front contested in 10 seats. CPI (M) candidates contested in 8 of them. The remaining two seats were contested by CPI and RSP candidates. Left-backed ISF candidates were scheduled to file their nominations in Mothabari and Sujapur. Six of the 8 seats in Malda Sadar subdivision, but the CPI (M) candidate in Gazole assembly constituency could not file his nomination papers on Thursday due to non-cooperation of the returning officer. The candidates in Harishchalpur subdivision, including Gazole, filed their papers on Saturday.
