Mamata Banerjee's Grip on West Bengal Politics Remains Unbroken

West Bengal politics never follows a straightforward script. It swings, shocks, and often writes its own rules. Bengal politics has seen major changes over the past decade, but one thing that has remained constant in the midst of this turmoil is the dominance of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bengal. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has risen from the margins to become the main opposition party, but breaking into Mamata's fortress still remains a major challenge for it. On paper, this seems to be an ideal situation for a change of power. Given the BJP's pan-India strength and its growing mass base in the state, many analysts feel that Bengal is now ripe for change. However, the reality is that Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) is saving its bastion with considerable ease even today. The question arises as to why despite the BJP's rapid rise, it is not able to break through this political vacuum in Bengal. According to an Economic Times report, Mamata Banerjee's political association with the West Bengal brand of people is only because of Mamata Banerjee's speeches.
