Mamata Banerjee's Political Empire Crumbles After Historic Election Defeat in West Bengal

By 4 May 2026, Mamata Banerjee was the most powerful leader in West Bengal and the reins of power were in her hands. But just 30 days later, by 4 June, the picture has completely changed. The crushing defeat in the assembly elections, the rebellion of more than 50 MLAs of her own party, the resignation of the trusted mayor Firhad Hakim, the retreat of the ground commanders and the clampdown of the central agencies on Abhishek Banerjee. All this together brought Mamata's political empire to the floor. The whole story begins with the results of the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections. The Trinamool Congress suffered a historic defeat in these elections and the party was out of power. Out of 294 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party won a historic victory, winning 207 seats and forming the government in the state on its own for the first time. While the TMC was reduced to 80 seats, the Congress got 2, the AIJUP got 2, the CPM got 1 and others got 2 seats. It was not just the defeat, but the anger inside the party and within a few days, the question on the results of the party's leadership started to arise.
