Meerut district, located in the western region of Uttar Pradesh, is historically and politically important. The district lies in the Doab region of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers, making it extremely fertile for agriculture. According to mythology, Meerut derives its name from'Mayrashtra ', the capital of Ravana's father-in-law and the great architect'Mayan Demon '. The region is also mentioned in the Mahabharata period, when it was part of the Hastinapur kingdom of the Kauravas-Pandavas. Meerut's historical importance is also associated with the First Indian War of Independence of 1857. From the Meerut Cantonment on 10 May 1857, Indian soldiers blew the bugle of rebellion against British rule. The rebellion soon spread to the whole of North India, shaking the foundations of the British Empire. The revolution began with the Kali Paltan Temple (Augharanath Temple), which is a prominent monument even today. Much of the Meerut district is the most fertile in the Doab region, due to the abundance of cash crops. Sugarcane, rice, and wheat are also grown on a large scale.
