Nepal's PM Balen Shah Confronts Public Anger Over Controversial Decisions

Kathmandu: There is growing resentment among many sections of the public against the Balen Shah-led government in Nepal. Balen Shah, who assumed power after a landslide election victory, has not even completed a month as prime minister. Some of his decisions taken during this period have not gone down well with the public and there are protests on the streets. These issues include the ban on the student union, strict customs clearance on imports from India, and the issue of corruption involving the home minister. The issues that have contributed most to the political rise of Balen Shah, the mayor-turned-PM of Kathmandu. In the first month of forming the government, he has been facing public anger over the same issues. Balen Shah became a national leader from the 2025 student movement and made corruption a major issue of his election. People are on the streets against him on both these issues. Balen Shah has studied in India and is now advocating good relations with the neighboring country. He has brought goods imported from India at a price of 100 rupees, which is the main reason for the protest against the Indian government.
