No-Confidence Motion Against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Set for Discussion on March 9

The no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is likely to be taken up for discussion on Monday (March 9). Parliament will meet on March 9 for the second phase of the Budget Session. The Lok Sabha Secretariat has listed the motion to remove Om Birla as Speaker for business on Monday. As per rules, 50 members of the House have to stand up when the Chair calls for it. The motion will then be taken up for discussion and voting. If 50 members do not stand up for the notice, the motion cannot be moved. According to Monday's agenda paper, the motion is the only item listed as business of the day. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju recently told PTI that the motion will come up on March 9. On Monday, the notice will be moved by three Congress members - Mohammad Javed, K Suresh and Mallu Ravi. The proposed motion questions the Speaker's behaviour in suspending the entire Opposition MPs "session as he accused them of" unnecessarily "allowing the Leader of Opposition and other women leaders to speak.
