Alambadi Azmi, the oldest SP MLA in the country, died at the age of 90. Late on Wednesday night, he breathed his last at his residence in Azamgarh, UP. He had been ill for the past four months. He was being treated at Medanta Hospital in Lucknow. He was laid to rest at the graveyard of Jamiatur Rashad in Azamgarh on Thursday at 4.30 p.m. Nearly 10,000 people attended his funeral. Alambadi Azmi was a five-time MLA from Nizamabad seat. Alambadi Azmi, known for his Gandhian image, was considered a close confidant of Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav. Five months ago, he had reached the assembly on a scooty. Four assembly seats in the state have now fallen vacant after Alambadi's death. Three of these seats belong to the SP and one to the BJP. In January this year, SP MLA from Sonbhadra Vijay Singh from Gondpur, and BJP MLA from Bareilly, Farida Farida Firozi, had died.
