Pakistan Appeals to India for Constructive Talks on Indus Waters Treaty After International Tribunal Verdict

India had on Monday refused to accept the verdict of the Hague-based International Tribunal on the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and also categorically denied the legality of the tribunal. After India's strong stance, Pakistan on Wednesday appealed to India to negotiate "constructively" within the ambit of the 1960 water-sharing agreement. According to news agency PTI, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said that the Permanent Court of Arbitration has reaffirmed that the treaty is fully enforceable and binding. He said Pakistan will take all possible measures to ensure that the verdict is implemented. Andrabi said Pakistan is committed to implementing the treaty in its entirety and in its true spirit, in accordance with its language, spirit and legal provisions. He further added that Pakistan will continue to appeal to India to adopt a similar attitude, so that the treaty can be adhered to in full accordance with its language, spirit and legal provisions.
