Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Wins PoK Elections Amid Brother's Ambitions

The election results are coming in the midst of a bloody conflict in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Shehbaz Sharif's party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, has won and is in a position to form a government. But here is the twist. Nawaz Sharif, who returned from London and has been running the government from the backdoor for several months, had earlier expressed his desire to become the prime minister of PoK. Now after the election results, the big question before Shehbaz Sharif is whether he will fulfill his brother's wish? The PoK legislative assembly elections, which began in late July 2026, are being held in three phases. The PML-N won nine seats out of 13 in Mirpur division in the first phase on 27 July, while the People's Party (PPP) got four. The PML-N also dominated Muzaffarabad division and refugee seats in the second phase on 2 August. According to official and unofficial results, the party captured most of the seats declared. Overall, the PML-N has close to 23 seats in the first two phases. These results could easily make the current government in the third phase or the third phase a clean sweep.
