The Congress has appointed Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. He will take charge of the party's state unit in place of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. Pargat Singh is a Congress MLA from Jalandhar Cantt and also a former Olympian. Vijay Inder Singla was earlier said to be the front-runner for the post. Raja Warring resigned as Punjab Congress state president on 2 October. The Congress then decided to hand over the responsibility of state president to Navjot Singh Sidhu. It was reported by the Congress that the working presidents and chairpersons and co-chairpersons of various election-related committees in Punjab will continue in their posts as earlier with the SAD. Pargat Singh is among the senior leaders of the Congress and is active in Punjab politics. Former Olympian Pargat Singh had stepped into politics before the 2012 Punjab Assembly elections. He contested and won the Jalandhar Cantt seat on a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ticket. Pargat Singh was appointed as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee with effect from 2016. He was suspended along with other leaders by Sidhu in 2016.
