Parliament Session Marred by Chaos as Protesters Clash with Police

The monsoon session of Parliament began today but was marred by ruckus on the first day. On the one hand, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha proceedings had to be repeatedly adjourned due to sharp opposition protests inside Parliament, while on the other hand, there were clashes between protesters and police outside the Parliament complex. The situation was such that the police lathicharged, fired tear gas shells and turned the entire area into a cantonment to stop the protesters. A large number of students and protesters had left for the Parliament march from Jantar Mantar to protest against the alleged paper leak in the NEET UG exam. Security agencies barricaded the area to stop them, but the protesters reached the outer part of the Parliament complex. The situation became so tense that some of the entrances to Parliament had to be temporarily closed. There were scuffles between the police and protesters at many places, while the security forces took control of the situation by the evening. The Jantar Mantar, the centre of the day-long agitation, and the social media claimed that only security personnel were seen at the metro station.
