Parliamentary Committee Adopts Draft Report on NTA Reforms Despite Ruling Coalition Opposition

A committee of Parliament on Tuesday unanimously adopted a draft report on reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA). It saw a tussle between the opposition and members of the ruling coalition over granting statutory status to the agency. According to sources, at a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, opposition members demanded statutory status to the NTA while NDA members opposed it. The committee adopted the draft report on reforms and strengthening of the NTA after agreeing on the wording of the report, but they did not elaborate on it. The committee, headed by Congress member Mukul Wasnik, met for the sixth time on August 19, 2026, to discuss and adopt the draft of the 382nd report that was circulated earlier via email. The report was again redistributed to build consensus among the members. The committee was headed by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, under whom two papers on reforms for the NTA were discussed.
